One of the hardest things I encountered while working on my Crown project this semester was trying to figure out how to assemble a large piece of jewelry with 12 different parts that all had to be attached together and shaped. One of my two approaches to this problem was to construct a crown with the same dimensions as the one I wanted to make, out of cardboard, and assemble it in order to help myself visualize how it would all go together. Once I saw and held the three dimensional model it really allowed me to conceptualize the crown much more easily than looking at my drawings and pictures. My second solution was once I had all the pieces crafted I laid them out on the table to better see how they would fit together and what method and order of assembly made the most sense.
One finishing problem I encountered was while trying to etch the bands for the crown. Since they were so big I could only use one at a time. One of the bands ended up sitting in the acid for much longer than the other, making the pattern visible on one band and completely invisible on the other. My solution to this problem was to heat patina both pieces in an attempt to cover up the presence and lack of the intended design.
Moving forward after making this project I hope to apply the methods of planning that I used in my cooking career. Alot of the time when I try to make something I just go for it, but in this case it was much better to carefully plan it out rather than just going for it. This will be helpful in cooking by making sure I'm not wasting product, and ensuring that the best method of preparation is used.
